QUIT Programme Evaluation

Yorkshire Cancer Research commissioned the Sheffield Centre for Health and Related Research (SCHARR) to carry out a comprehensive evaluation of hospital-based stop smoking services in the region.

Introduction

The evaluation started with the QUIT programme which was implemented in eight NHS Trusts across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw in 2021 and aims to provide effective support for staff and patients to stop smoking. The evaluation will also cover the implementation of a similar hospital-based stop smoking service in Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

The QUIT programme aims to ensure that treatment for tobacco addiction is built into the routine care given to every patient who smokes attending any hospital in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw. Patients are offered free nicotine replacement therapies (NRT) and have access to specialist support while in hospital, which continues through community-based stop smoking services when they are discharged.

About the evaluation

The evaluation aims to assess the effectiveness and implementation of this hospital-based stop smoking service, supporting efforts to reduce smoking rates and improve public health.

The evaluation of the QUIT programme is divided into three parts:

  • Understanding the service, implementation challenges and data collection
  • Gathering initial feedback from staff and improving data collection
  • Surveying staff and patients, data analysis and modelling future quit rates

The evaluation findings will support the continual improvement the QUIT Programme and inform other NHS hospital trusts looking to set up similar programmes.

The University of Sheffield was commissioned by Yorkshire Cancer Research to undertake this evaluation of the QUIT service as a consultancy project (SA/R117). The University has used further funds from Research England to generate knowledge to enhance the impact of this work [QR-Policy Support Fund].
